I am so happy I found this: “Saint Athanasius and the ‘Penal Substitutionary’ Atonement Doctrine” by Kevin Allen today.
What a great post on one of my favorite topics: substituionary atonement. I think it’s a morbid, negative and creepy doctrine which has been very harmful to the Christian Church. And as Kevin Allen points out: it’s pretty new.
If you’re being taught that Christ died in our place to assuage a wrathful and blood-thirsty god, then you need to read Kevin Allen’s post… and change churches.

Change churches, indeed!
It’s kinda hard for me to be a Reformed theological guy sometimes. Man, did we blow it in places!
We need to create church banners that should be placed outside all church entrances that read, “Sorry, for our mess. Reformation still in progress.”
